The Beginning of a New Season | Bay Area Newborn Photography

Dec

There is something especially meaningful about photographing a family in the first days after everything has changed.

The house is still the same. The photographs are still hanging on the walls, the familiar rooms still look the way they did before, and the family dog is still finding the best place to curl up on the bed. And yet, suddenly, someone entirely new belongs there.

I photographed this sweet family at home in the San Francisco Bay Area shortly after they welcomed their daughter. For newborn sessions like this, I love allowing the home and the people in it to become part of the story rather than trying to make those early days feel overly polished or perfect.

We spent most of the session simply letting them be together.

There were quiet moments curled up on the bed, tiny fingers wrapped around her parents’ hands, sleepy stretches, soft smiles, and plenty of time for both mom and dad to hold their new little girl on their own. Their dog naturally wandered in and out of the photographs too—which, of course, felt exactly right.

That is one of the things I love most about photographing newborns at home. The images aren’t only about what a baby looked like when she was this small. They become a record of the world she entered.

The bedroom where her parents held her.

The blanket she disappeared into.

Her mother’s hands around her.

The way she fit against her father’s shoulder.

Even the family dog keeping watch nearby.

So much of it feels ordinary while you are living it. Years later, those details have a way of becoming some of the most meaningful parts.

Photographs for the seasons that follow

I have always believed photographs become more valuable with time.

A wedding photograph may begin as a record of one extraordinary day, but eventually it becomes part of a much larger family story. The same is true of these first newborn photographs. Someday, this little girl will be able to see exactly how tiny she once was—and, more importantly, how completely surrounded by love she was from the very beginning.

That idea is at the heart of the way I photograph people.

I want to create beautiful photographs, of course. But I also want them to hold something real: relationships, gestures, personality, and all the small pieces of a season that are surprisingly easy to forget once life moves forward.

Because it always does.

Babies grow. Families change. New chapters begin.

And photographs allow us to keep a little of what it felt like along the way.

For families welcoming a new baby, an in-home newborn session can be one of the simplest ways to document this season exactly where it is unfolding—without needing to turn it into anything other than what it already is.

Home, together, at the very beginning.
